How much it costs to frame a large painting in Spain

You buy a large work, walk into the framing shop with the measurements on your phone, and walk out with a quote you did not expect. This is what framing a 100 cm piece actually costs in Spain, what drives every euro of it, and when it makes sense to do it yourself.

First: what an American box frame is

It is the frame used for work on canvas. The painting sits on its stretcher and "floats" inside a wooden box, with 5 to 10 mm of air all around. No glass, no mount — which is why it gives no reflections.

It is a different thing from the classic moulding-plus-glass frame used for works on paper, prints and photography. Their prices are nothing alike.

Workshop prices for a 100 cm piece

These are street ranges in Spain, with the canvas already on its stretcher:

• Box frame in lacquered MDF (white or black): 90-140 €
• Box frame in solid wood (stained pine, oak, walnut): 150-250 €
• Wide moulding or special finishes (gold leaf, hand stains, premium timber): 250-400 €

If you bring loose canvas with no stretcher, add 40 to 80 € for the stretcher and mounting.

If the work is on paper and needs glass, the maths changes:

• Simple moulding + mount + standard glass at 70 x 100 cm: 120-200 €
• Anti-reflective glass: +40 to +90 €
• Museum glass (99 % UV filter, no reflection): +150 to +300 €. On large pieces the glass can cost more than the wood.
• Acrylic: dearer than standard glass, but half the weight and it does not shatter in transit. On large formats it is usually the sensible choice.

These are guide prices: they vary a lot between Madrid or Barcelona and a small town, and between an artisan workshop and a chain. Always get two quotes.

What drives the price

1. Linear metres of moulding. Wood is charged by the metre, so the perimeter rules, not the surface. A 100 x 100 cm square is 4 linear metres. A 100 x 56 cm landscape is 3.12 m. Two paintings of almost identical surface can differ by 25 % purely on format.

2. The timber. Between lacquered MDF and solid oak or walnut the price can double. Lacquered MDF in white or black looks perfectly good and is the honest budget option; solid wood shows in the edge and in the weight.

3. Glass or no glass. A box frame has no glass, and that saves a large slice of the bill. On works on paper, glass can be half the quote.

4. The assembly. Mounting the canvas in the box, squaring it, fitting the hardware and hangers is 30 to 60 € of labour in many workshops. Sometimes it is included in the moulding price and sometimes not — ask.

5. Getting it home. A framed 100 cm painting will not fit in a small car. If the workshop delivers, count on 20-50 € more.

What to ask before saying yes

Get the quote in writing and make sure it states: exact stretcher size, timber and finish, whether canvas mounting is included, whether hardware and hangers are included, delivery time, and whether VAT is included. Half the nasty surprises come from a verbal quote without VAT.

Doing it yourself: when it pays

A box frame is not a difficult object. It is a box of four mitred battens with the canvas suspended inside on screws from the back.

Materials for a 100 cm frame:

• Planed pine batten, 4-5 metres: 15-30 €
• Screws, brackets and glue: 10 €
• Stain or paint and a brush: 10-15 €

Total: 40 to 60 € in materials, against 150-250 € at the workshop.

The catch is the tooling. You need a mitre saw (or the timber yard to cut the 45° angles for you, which many will), long clamps and a flat surface. If you already own a mitre saw, you save from the first frame. If you have to buy one (80-150 €), you start saving from the third.

An honest tip: if this is your first frame, do not start with a one-metre one. Mitred corners are unforgiving, and on a large box a 1 mm error per cut becomes an open joint you can see from the sofa. Practise on something small.

The full sum

If you buy a large unframed reproduction and frame it yourself, the total usually looks like this:

• Large unframed giclée reproduction: 60-120 €
• Solid wood box frame at a workshop: 150-250 €
• Delivery or transport: 20-50 €

Total: between 230 and 420 €, plus two trips to the workshop and two or three weeks of waiting.

If you already own the work and have a framer you trust round the corner, doing it yourself is perfectly reasonable — and now you know what you should be paying.
